Talking Points: The Captivity of Job

  • Religious tradition has long held the book of Job as God’s way of using sickness, disease and calamity as tools of God to teach, train and humble people.
  • The author of Job was inspired by God to write the book but not everything said in the book of Job is inspired by God.
  • God said that Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar did not speak correctly about Him. This means that we have to take what they said and examine it in light of the rest of scripture to know what is right and what is wrong.
  • Many of people have taken the misspoken words that were spoken by these men and used them to say things that the Bible really doesn’t teach.
  • Job said that he said things that he did not understand and things he did not know and he repented.
  • People have used verses 1:22 and 2:10 to say that Job did not sin. These are the only two verses that say this and after 2:10 it is never said again.
  • Job may have not sinned to this point but he eventually did otherwise He would not have repented.
  • Why would Job repent if he hadn’t done anything wrong?
  • Job repented of the things he said. If Job repented of it should we then take it as truth? If what his friends said is not right then do we take that as truth?
  • The word of God calls Job’s struggles captivity. Job’s captivity is what was captured or taken from Job. Captivity is a curse and never a blessing.
  • Proverbs says that a curse doesn’t just arbitrarily without cause enter our lives.
  • We can see clearly that Job made mistakes that opened the door to the devil.
  • God did not deliver Job into the hand of satan. God did not give Job over to the devil. Job 1:12 is telling us that all Job has is already available to the devil.
  • Job said two things that help us see what happened “I greatly feared” and “I dreaded.”
  • As Job gave room to fear the hedge of protection, the hedge of faith disappeared and he gave place to the devil. Fear opens the door for the devil.
