Talking Points: Paul's Thorn

  • The enemy has told people for decades “If God didn’t heal Paul and Job why do we think God will heal us?” If it wasn’t God’s will to heal them, then it may not be God’s will to heal us.
  • Remember the most important question we can ask is “What does the Bible say?”
  • Notice that verse 7 begins with the word “and” a conjunction word. To understand verse 7 we have to go back to verse 6 first.
  • The word boast is usually thought of as a negative. The word boast comes from a Greek word that means to glory and to boast. The context that it is used in determines if it is positive or negative.
  • If Paul is speaking the truth it is not negative boasting. Negative boasting is foolish.
  • Paul is saying in verse 6 that he could boast or glory and it would be the truth and not foolishness but he holds back so that people don’t put him on a pedestal. That people don’t think of him beyond what is true and what can be seen and heard in his lifestyle.
  • Paul’s words and actions agreed. He did not say one thing and do another.
  • Paul was a man of integrity and he was a very humble man.
  • Somewhere in church history the idea and the belief came about that verse 7 is talking about Paul being prideful.
  • When you study the different translations you see this thought starting to emerge in the late 1800’s and by 1960 it begins to show up in modern translations as an established truth.
  • It is possible that this belief existed long before this but it can be seen as a deliberate translation from 1960 on.
  • This is where we have to go back to the Greek text to see what was actually written.
  • When we do this and we look at other scriptures we will see what the Bible really does say.
  • What were these awesome revelations? Acts 9, The Lord Jesus Himself, 2 Corinthians 12:1 of the Lord Jesus, Galatians 1, the gospel, Ephesians 3 the gospel is for everyone, 1 and 2 Thessalonians and 1 Corinthians 15, the resurrection and the rapture.
  • God gave these revelations to Paul
  • When people receive these revelations they will believe in Jesus Christ and be saved. They will come to the knowledge of the truth and be free of the devil’s lies and bondage.
