Talking Points: Paul's Revelations and The Thorn 02-21-2018

  • Remember verse 7 is in the context of verse 6
  • What were these awesome revelations? Acts 9, The Lord Jesus Himself, 2 Corinthians 12:1 of the Lord Jesus, Galatians 1, the gospel, Ephesians 3 the gospel is for everyone, 1 and 2 Thessalonians and 1 Corinthians 15, the resurrection and the rapture.
  • Where did Paul get these revelations and who or what were they about? From the Lord Jesus and about the Lord Jesus and the gospel.
  • These revelations will reveal Jesus for who He really is and what He has really done. When people receive these revelations they will believe in Jesus Christ and be saved. They will come to the knowledge of the truth and be free of the devil’s lies and bondage.
  • The words “exalted above measure” comes from one Greek word and it is used only 3 times in the bible. 2 times here in 2 Corinthians 12:7 and once in 2 Thessalonians 2:4
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:4 Paul is quoting Daniel 11:36. The antichrist will no doubt be motivated by pride but this exalting of himself is to lift himself above everyone on earth and in heaven so that he is higher than anyone.
  • The Greek word translated “exalted above measure” means to lift up above. In the context of all three occasions it means to lift out of obscurity so others can see.
  •  When we take this understanding and look at verse 7 of 2 Corinthians 12 we see that the revelations that God gave Paul lifted the gospel out of obscurity so that people could know and receive it.
  • If it is a messenger of satan or an angel of satan then who sent it? The devil
  • Why would the devil send a messenger or angel to keep Paul from being lifted up with pride? The devil is all about pride and he certainly doesn’t discourage pride, he promotes pride.
  • Why? To keep the gospel obscured to those who haven’t heard the gospel.
  • If you can limit or silence the messenger you can limit or silence the message.
  • The focus is the revelation of Jesus, the revelation of the gospel, the revelation that it is for everyone.
  • Numbers 33:55, Joshua 23:13 and Judges 2:3 clearly show us that the word thorn is people and not sickness and disease.
  • What does this tell us about 2 Corinthians 12:7
  • It tells us that satan was trying to keep the revelation knowledge that God gave Paul from being known by others.
  • The devil was trying to shut Paul up so the revelation of Jesus and the gospel would not go forth.
  • The devil sent his messenger or angel to stir up people against Paul and the gospel. The devil used these people to “buffet” him.
  • When people receive these revelations they will believe in Jesus Christ and be saved. They will come to the knowledge of the truth and be free of the devil’s lies and bondage.
